Well, considering that the boys hadn't encountered a demon in person prior to "Phantom Traveler," Dean might not have known what to say before they got to Bobby's place. He was really thinking more along the lines of a shapeshifter or ghoul (disneymagics has a great story in her Wish!verse in which John is captured and replaced by a ghoul).
